Substance Abuse and Home Healthcare

There is no health issue more appropriate for the benefits of home health care than drug
addiction. Confidentiality, medical/health complications, access, and cost are but a few of the
reasons why Dr. Brown’s Home Drug System advocates empowering the home and collaborative
health care for the prevention and treatment of drug addiction.
Home health care encourages the use of technology, cooperation, and collaboration of health
professionals across all disciplines to provide effective healthcare for the benefit of cost,
convenience, and necessity in a "home environment"
Dr. Brown’s Home Drug Testing System does not provide treatment but recommends all positive
test result recipients immediately contact a primary care provider. The fact that the system does
not provide treatment is not viewed as a limitation, but a practical recognition of the many
health complications often associated with drug addiction.
Drug addiction is a multifaceted problem that often involves physical, mental, and social
components. No one profession or specialty can effectively address all the problems that cause
or result from drug addiction. It is for this reason we advocate organizing a "SYSTEM" of collaboration among health professionals to address all relevant facets of the problem.
Having primary care providers (PCPs) rule out the contribution of disorders, diseases, and/or
pain is our standard and clinically responsible procedure. We have a list of resources to assist
PCPs, mental health, addiction specialists, and other health practitioners for preventing and
supporting home health care for substance abuse.
Dr Brown’s Home Drug Testing System recognizes that ignoring the contribution of the home is
a critical omission for the prevention of drug addiction. We hope it will facilitate recognition of
the home as the foundation for healthcare in general.
"The problem is often difficult to stop once it starts and no matter the benefits acquired
from treatment, you always have to come home!"
